Freedom 251 smartphone was an international headline in 2016. Freedom 251 was the world’s cheapest smartphone made by Ringing Bells Private Limited. Bharatiya Janata Party MP Kirit Somaiya promoted the smartphone. Freedom 251, a 3G-based phone with a display of 540×960 pixel was available at a price of Rs. 251.
On the first day of booking, there was such a high traffic that the website crashed. The company aimed to sell 5.0 million phones by June 2016. MD Mohit Goel of Ringing Bells declared that the company has already sold 70,000 phones and the remaining phones would be delivered soon on December 16, 2016. Cash on delivery was not an option, to begin with. 30,000 customers paid for the Freedom 251 and about seven crore people registered to buy it.
Ringing Bells guaranteed to deliver 25 lakh smartphones before June 30, 2016, and then lower the limit to two lakh units. The company claimed that they had successfully delivered 5,000 units. Ringing Bells Private Limited provided a refund to 30,000 customers. Ringing Bells Private Limited was a Noida-based company.
The Indian Cellular Association has suspected that how could they sell a smartphone at such a low price, even with the subsidized sale, price should not be less than Rs. 3,500. ICA then requested telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad to investigate. Ringing Bell was charged for fraud and non-payment of the customer’s service provider.
The Freedom 251 Mobile Scandal
Nobody can ever forget the sensational news of the world’s cheapest smartphone Freedom 251. Ringing Bell is not a flop story but it was a well defined strategy of earning 6 crores in 6 months. The owners of the company first collected money in advance from customers by promising them that they would deliver the phones in the next six months or else they would refund the money.
In the next step, they would deposit the collected money in the bank. The company garnered sales of Rs. 145 crores out of which they utilized rupees 6.5 crores against interest.
After six months they would refund the money to respective customers. It was a risky plan but the mastermind executed it in the best possible manner. The Consumer Forum claimed the company Ringing Bell was a fraud, however, the crime branch gave them a clean chit.
The MD Mohit Goel resigned and handed over the company to his brother. It is said that the government did not help even though Mohit Goel asked for a financial help of R. 70-80 crores.
