Fan for fan, film for film and earnings for earnings, Shah Rukh Khan is simply the biggest movie star in the world! Move over Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Swarzennegger and Tom Cruise! Make way for the biggest star in the whole globe. The man who is the undisputed King of Bollywood. The Badshah of Bollywood, as his millions of fans like to call him. The young boy from New Delhi who came to Mumbai with little money and big ambitions and worked hard to make himself the King Khan of Bollywood.
A Humble Beginning
Today Shah Rukh Khan’s net worth is over $750.0 million and counting. The boyish actor started his acting career by appearing in TV series like Fauji, Dil Dariya, Circus, Idiot, and minor parts in Umeed and Wagle ki Duniya. At that time it was believed that actors who started their careers in TV series would not make it in Bollywood. Many people wrote off Shah Rukh Khan and believed that the Delhi lad would not be able to get a break in Bollywood. However, Shah Rukh had dreams so big that TV could not hold him.
He struggled like any other Bollywood hopeful and then landed a small part in Hema Malini’s directional venture Dil Aashna Hai. His film debut was the blockbuster Deewana which was released in June 1992. From that day there has been no looking back for him as he kept delivering hit after hit at the box-office. Today Shah Rukh has acted in more than 80 films and is a veteran of the industry. Even though he started out as an actor today he is a successful film producer, television personality and businessman.
The Hits Kept Coming
In the initial phase of his career he played several villainous roles in movies like Darr, Baazigar and Anjaam. His rise to success and fame happened when he started playing romantic roles in a series of films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Mohabbatein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Yes Boss.
He also took up challenging roles in films like Devdas, Swades, Chak De! India and My Name is Khan. He was able to walk on the delicate path where his movies were earning money at the box-office and wowing the critics as well.
The Golden Phase of his Career
One can safely say that this period from 1995 to 2005 was the golden period of Shah Rukh’s career. Literally every project he touched turned into gold. It was due to this mega successful streak that he started being called the Badshah of Bollywood, King Khan and the Baazigar of Bollywood. Shah Rukh is one of the few actors who have kept his head firmly on his shoulders despite his mega success. With advancing age he has stopped playing the young romantic and started playing characters that are more believable and interesting.
A look at his last few films like Chennai Express, Happy New Year, Dilwale, and Raees shows that he is playing roles that are specially written for him where he is trying to create memorable characters. However, this transition has been bittersweet because while some films have been successful some have done badly at the box-office. Films like Chennai Express, Fan, Raees, and Dilwale cracked the BO and made money for everyone involved but films like Zero and Jab Harry Met Sejal tanked at the turnstiles. There is one thing that everyone agrees on. Hit or not Shah Rukh genuinely tries to do something fresh and new in every film these days.
What’s Next for King Khan?
Now the question on everybody’s lips is “What is King Khan going to do next?” Which film is he working on? Which director is working with him to create the next blockbuster for him? His fans are waiting eagerly for news on his next move. Shah Rukh himself has not been saying anything and as usual is keeping his cards close to his chest. There are rumors floating around that he is meeting with big-name directors like Farhan Akhtar, Raj Kumar Hirani, and Imtiaz Ali.
Will He or Won’t He?
Fans are wondering whether Shah Rukh will act in Don 3: The Chase Ends, a film that has been discussed for a while now. Farhan has been working on the script for the last few years even as rumors emerged that Khan had quit the franchise due to personal reasons. Reports of Akhtar approaching Ranveer Singh for the title role have also been making the rounds. While Khan has not said anything about this Akhtar at last call confirmed that Shah Rukh would act in Don 3. This is great news for the Hindi film industry because the reboot Don franchise is one of the highest grossing set of films ever.
Bad Man Again?
People are also speculating that Khan may appear in Dhoom 4, another hit franchise from the stables of the Chopras. The Dhoom franchise always has a star villain which gets the movie crazy fans rush to the theatres and there have been reports that Shah Rukh may play the villain this time. Big names like Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar have also been bandied about but the Chopras have not yet confirmed it. If Shah Rukh does appear in Dhoom 4 it will be a special treat for his fans who are yearning for him to play a villain again.
Taking a Break
Several magazines have been reporting that Shah Rukh might work in Raju Hirani’s next film but this news is not confirmed. What is confirmed that after the debacle of Zero King Khan is seriously thinking about what roles he must play in future? After all he is past 50 years and is the proud father of three children. While he still can give the youngsters in Bollywood a run for their money Khan is taking his time to decide on his next role. By his own admission he has been busy reading various scripts for the last 11 months. He has also been spending quality time with his family both in India and abroad.
The good news is that Khan might work with Tamil director Atlee in his next film tentatively titled “Sanki.” The catch is that it may not be a Hindi film but will be a Tamil film. Atlee is a much respected director of Tamil films and has been aching to work with SRK for a while. Towards the end of 2019 Atlee gave several hints that he has bagged Khan to act in his next venture and now it does appear that this may be true. So all those naysayers who were saying that King Khan must contemplate retirement should eat their words. The Badshah of Bollywood is all set to reign in future as well no matter what his detractors say.
Wearing Many Hats
Today Shah Rukh is not just an actor he is also a businessman. He is the part owner of his entertainment company named Red Chilies Entertainment and full owner of his IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders. Khan has always been a fan of sports and his dream to own a cricket team of his own bore fruition when he snapped up the Riders at the IPL auction. He has seen bad days at the beginning of his career after losing both his parents to cancer. Now even his sister is suffering from cancer.
King Khan Will Roar Again
Even though Khan has his fingers in several pies he is first and foremost an actor who is loved and worshipped by millions of people. They hang on to every word he says and see his movies even if it costs them their last rupee. Such is his popularity that even Hollywood stars find it to hard to match him in popularity. Now with maturity on his side and experience in every pore of his body the Baazigar of Bollywood is all set to rock n roll again. Sanki may be his next movie but it certainly won’t be his last. King Khan continues to rule!
