He is the man many people in America wanted to see as the president of their country. For a while it looked that it would really happen. Who are we talking about? We are talking about Paul Ryan the man who was on course to becoming one of the youngest presidents of the USA but then the cookie crumbled and it all fell apart. When the dust cleared it was Donald Trump who became the president of the USA and not Paul Ryan. So what is Paul Ryan doing now? Where is Paul Ryan? Don’t worry, we will tell you all we know about Paul Ryan including what he is doing right now.
Why Did Paul Ryan Retire?
Ryan announced on April 11, 2018, that he would not run for re-election in November 2018 and the man stayed true to his word. He said at the time of his announcement:
“I like to think I’ve done my part, my little part in history to set us on a better course.”
Donald Trump responded immediately with his trademark tweet writing:
“Speaker Paul Ryan is a truly good man, and while he will not be seeking re-election, he will leave a legacy of achievement that nobody can question.”
However people kept speculating about the reasons why Ryan retired. While some said that he was not on good terms with Trump others said that he left because he could not perform as per the party’s expectations. The media was very vocal about this with The Washington Post stating in an article that Ryan was:
“leav[ing] behind a legacy of dramatically expanded government spending and immense deficits, a GOP president unchecked, a broken immigration system, and a party that’s fast abandoning the free trade principles that he himself championed.”
The Associated Press said that Ryan
“achieved one of his career goals: rewriting the tax code however on his other defining aim – balancing the budget and cutting back benefit programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid – Ryan has utterly failed.”
Out of Public Favor
The theory of his retiring due to underperformance gained further traction when a poll by Daily Kos showed that public support of Ryan was at 12%, with 71% of the sample people taken disapproving of Ryan and 17% of people unsure. Unfortunately this has become one of the lowest ever approval ratings of an outgoing Speaker of the House.
Where is Paul Ryan Now?
Now people are asking what happened to Paul Ryan. No need for alarm as Ryan is doing very well for himself in the private sector. Despite leaving active politics Ryan has participated in some of Republican Party’s missions. Like the time he became the delegation leader to represent President Donald Trump on his visit to Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. He also attended the 40th anniversary ceremony of the Taiwan Relations Act along with the Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.
Isn’t It Ironic?
Ryan made another change that surprised many people. He moved from his longtime home in Janesville, Wisconsin, and along with his family rented a house in the Maryland suburbs of Washington. It’s ironic because when he was in active politics he was always eager to escape from Washington and spend as much time as he could in his hometown of Janesville.
Disagreeing with then President Obama
Ryan has always been passionate about his love for his country and has spoken his mind like the time after Barrack Obama’s State of the Union speech in 2016. After listening to the speech and disagreeing with most of Obama’s policies he told the media that Mr. Obama:
“tried to manage people’s perceptions instead of confronting reality: His policies aren’t working.”
A Twist in the Tale
It’s 2020 now and people are still thinking of Ryan since he made such an indelible impression on them. They wonder what he will do in the near future. Though Ryan hasn’t spoken on this matter it sure appears that he is fully engaged in his private sector career. Ryan is in a place that no one had predicted when he was being thought of as the answer to America’s problems. A twist in the tale of the man who was once thought as America’s future president!
